END OF SUMMER OR ENDLESS SUMMER

 Happy Labor Day!!
Labor Day weekend marks the unofficial end of summer, but also offers a great opportunity to celebrate the end of the season in style.

Our design team compiled a small bucket list of some leisurely ways to spend the blissful end days of Summer 2014.
Find the sea wherever it may be and stick your toe in it. The water is at its warmest, but still very refreshing.
Stroll along the water’s edge, sandals in hand and enjoy the sound of the waves and the cries of the gulls. Find a keepsake shell that marks this summer as special.

Treat yourself to an ice cream cone or a sundae.
That’s right, ice cream in some form that requires you hold it or at least has some type of topping on it and maybe some whip cream.
The idea is to capture the feeling you had as a child treated to a favorite ice cream treat… before you fell asleep in the backseat.

Or sink into the memory of being young, hip and adult. Get yourself one of those thick, creamy, fruity, fancy drinks on the outdoor patio of some cute sunny bistro.
If possible get one of those colorful paper umbrellas in it. Dress the part, bohemian ladies and people watch.

Take a hike
to a grassy field and pluck some wildflowers.
In lieu of this try your own garden, cut some flowers and arrange them in a vase, bring them inside along with the memory of the warm sun.

Got a patio and a chaise?
Sunscreen up, grab that book you’ve been trying to finish and relax in the shade. Or enjoy your backyard/garden in the throes of summer's end.

If you’re a music lover pipe some choice tunes into your backyard and pretend you’re in a French film.
If you’ve a tablet or e-reader, play the tunes on your music app.

Invite some friends over.  If the thought of a barbeque overwhelms … have an impromptu BYO (bring your own) picnic, or set out a salad &  fixings buffet style spread filled with good eats.
Use some of those vegetables you worked so hard to grow and let everyone make their own salad.
Catch up and review: What did you do this summer?
Break out the cards and the old school games like Scrabble.
Throw on a little retro summer music … Beach Boys, Sly and the family Stone, Joni Mitchell … and you may have a party on your hands.

Go shopping. Whether online or your favorite specialty shop, summer clothing sales are in there final markdown days.
Labor Day Sales are everywhere. Now is the time to hunt down a duplicate of your favorite summer blouse, skirt or other. If you shop online, look for special coded savings on top of the advertised markdowns and free S/H. Some stores will offer early bird savings for their Fall/Winter collections as well.

Road trip and/or picnic.  Pack a picnic of your favorite no mess eats and take a day trip to the country or your favorite State park and have a picnic.
Or forget about packing  food, take a road trip and end up at a country inn.
If you ride a bicylce, pack a lunch, rack the bike and drive to a park with a bike path and have an adventure.

If your boat is still in the water … take ’er out ... for a final sail or fish or even a row.

Capture the magic of these moments with your phone, tablet or digital camera … Selfies are an endless source of amusement, so if you haven’t quite figured out how to take one, this is a good time to try.

What’s on your end of summer bucket list?

  1. I was so thrilled to see a new post today. It brought back memories of Summer vacations at the beach, walks along the shore line, finding shells, summer loves, fresh seafood dinners, breakfast at the french bakery, times spent with loved ones who have since passed on. Life goes by so fast. All this Summer seems to have been was endless mowing. This post brings back the hopes for a future Summer where we slow down and enjoy what is magical.

  2. I just love summer! When I was a little kid, my brother and I had a swing set, and we would tie up the garden hose to either the swing or the slide and get soaking wet. My favorite part of summer is having an ice cream cone. Which leads me to my suggestion for next summer. I was thinking that you can make a corded necklace with a big ice cream cone pendant in the center, and have other summer themed charms going up the sides. This time of year, I love to sit out on our breeze way, and feel the cool breeze and listen to the sounds of nature. Sarah Bullington

  3. This is such a healthy reminder to take time to enjoy the simple luxuries of Summer. I really needed this reminder and I am so grateful for such a wake up call. I am going to try and do all of the wonderful things Helen suggested before Summer ends as I have been so busy with my big organic garden, flower gardens, and cat rescue to do hardly any of these things. I think this blog was custom tailored for ladies like me who really need that nudge and wake up call to slow down and sip ice tea on a porch or go put our toes in the sand on a pretty beach. Thank you for the wake up call today. This has been one of my absolute favorite blog entries ever. Lanie Alexandria Costeas McCain

    1. Lanie, it sounds like you have an interesting life. Don't you just love a life full of flowers, gardens, and animals? I can tell you from experience that slowing down, and making memories with those you love and care about is so important. We only get one chance at life, we leave this world with nothing but our own memories, and leave behind the memories we've made with others. I will think of you sipping ice tea on your porch while I'm doing the same on my porch. Blessings, Sheryl Pierson

  4. What a wonderful blog!!! When I was a little girl my father and I would go out to the back yard at night, spread a blanket down, and watch the stars. Of course there had to be some ice cream involved!! The city somehow disappeared, and we were part of the heavens. I love gardening, and my favorite thing is to go out into the garden, sit among the flowers, and watch the bees. They never seem to mind me, I have planted just for them, and the butterflies. I know I've seen a fairy or two!! I watch them fly, dance, and sing their way through the flowers. My neighbors call me the Bee Whisperer. Oh Summer, I wish it would last longer!!! Sheryl Pierson

  5. I agree with you Lanie and Sheryl. Bees and butterflys are my favorite things. I love gardens. If I could, I would have one myself. But unfortunately, I am not capable of having one. Sarah Bullington.

  8. Thanks for the inspiring blog!! Some of my best memories of summer were as a child riding my bike, eating fresh peas out of the garden, and walking through the meadows looking for wildflowers and butterflies. We should always nurture that connection to nature and the ones we love. Thanks for the music too - always love Joni. Debbie / goodmorningstarshine

  9. My favorite childhood summer memory is walking to the beach with my brother and sisters to spend the day. I have never forgotten laying in the sun behind the beach house reading a book and eating snowcones! It was idyllic! So free and easy...a different world.I miss that beach so much!
