BOO!
With Halloween only a short
time away, the design team thought to share some fun facts on the “spookies”
that accompany the fanfare of this favorite Kirks Folly Holiday.
BLACK CATS, WITCH’S, AND SKELETONS, OH MY!
Painting by Chrissie Snelling |
Black cats are a familiar sight on
Halloween decorations and have been ascribed a variety of myths, most
pertaining to bad luck. A customary belief is that a witch can transform
into a black cat. Or in the case where the two are seen together, a cat is
witch’s familiar: a second skin the witch can slip into when stealth is needed.
There are a lot of superstitions surrounding black cats but did you know that animal
shelters refuse to allow black cats to be adopted around Halloween? They try to
protect the cats from being used as a novelty or abused.
Black cats are also the last cats to be adopted from shelters as a result of the superstition surrounding them. We hope anyone considering picking up a kitten or cat from a shelter will consider the beautiful and much maligned black cat. On a good note, according to Scottish lore, a black cat on your porch brings prosperity.

Witches are depicted in many mythologies and are rarely seen without at least one of their magical tools: the broom and the cauldron.
A witches broom is called a bessom. It is used in ritual to sweep out the negative energy and bring in good energy.
During the Middle Ages, most witch rituals included the use of hallucinogenic herbs, with which they anointed themselves or imbibed. Under the influence of these herbs… well lets just say the bessom wasn’t needed to keep the witches flying high during their rituals.
Cauldrons of iron graced with three legs are used even by today’s Wicca practitioners.
Incantations are chanted as herbs and berries are stirred and boiled in the cauldron and in this way the practitioners connect with their Goddess
Skulls and Skelton’s are part of Halloween because the holiday was once a solemn day to remember all those whom had passed.
Much in the way Christmas Eve is celebrated with Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve precedes New Year’s Day, All Hallows’ Eve is a vigil to All Soul’s Day or All Saint’s Day.
Lighting candles for the dead and visiting graveyards to place the candles upon the grave with prayer of celebration slowly transformed into the festive holiday we now experience. Skeletons and skulls also represent the Grim Reaper.
Trick or Trick? The practice of going door to door and asking this question came from the ancient practice of “souling”.
Originating in the Middle Ages, in Britain and Ireland, “soul cakes,” a sort of round scone with currents, were traditionally set out with wine as an offering for the dead on All Hallows’ Eve.
On All Saint’s Day groups of adults and children would make the rounds asking for the treats by way of song.
Receive a soul cake, pray for the soul and consume the treat. To consume a soul cake was to ensure a soul was freed from Purgatory to find its proper home.

It later became the norm for groups of children to dress up in disguise, go to richer neighborhoods and offer a “trick” for a treat. Each child would perform a trick: a song, acrobatic, magic trick or the like. No matter how small the trick, the child would receive a treat in return: soul cakes, cookies or often coins.
Orange and Black, the traditional colors of Halloween have their roots in Celtic lore. Black is the symbol for death, while orange is a reflection of the autumn harvest.
So
there you have it, just a few of the many things the design team learned over
the years as they researched this wonderful holiday to create the Kirks Folly
Halloween designs.
We want to take this opportunity to thank those of you who gave us so many great ideas that were far off our radar, but we really enjoyed rising to the challenge to design. One of our favorites was creating Halloween mermaids! We even ended up creating a mermaid witch one year!

And on another strange note, one design team member has a tradition of watching The Wizard of Oz on Halloween Eve.
Maybe not so weird, the Wicked Witch of the West certainly had it going on, a bike that turned into a flying broom, ruby slippers and flying monkeys that did her bidding!!
Have a wonderful Halloween and remember to:
SPARKLE THE
WORLD!
Enjoy this wee bit of film introducing the Wicked Witch!

Oh Helen, it is good to see you writing blogs again. I just love Holloween, and my KF Holloween jewelry. Last week we had a Holloween party, and I wore the heart of the raven necklace and earrings, and my seaviewmoon witch hat pin, and I was the most sparkley person their. I just love selebrating Holloween, it is a time to let luse and be silly. And I just love the wickid witch on the wizard of oz. Sarah Bullington

ReplyDeleteHalloween is my all-time favorite holiday because it's focused on having fun and wearing costumes and celebrates fun things like witches, pumpkins, and cats. My most recent purchase was the absolutely fabulous pumpkin patch necklace with cats and glittery pumpkins dangling from black cord. I have numerous of your Halloween pieces but this necklace may be my favorite. Thank you for mentioning in your blog the challenge that black cats face in shelters, patiently waiting to be adopted but get passed over due to ridiculous superstition. I am a devoted volunteer for a local no kill rescue cat shelter so I get very sad to see sweet and beautiful black kitties overlooked...or worse yet, mistreated or tormented by humans due to the color of their fur. Your Halloween creations always celebrate the beauty and majesty of black cats and I appreciate that so much! Helen, I hope you continue to write your blog posts as they are such a joy to read
ReplyDeleteI love every single one of your beautiful Halloween creations and I will treasure them and wear them for years to come. Thank you for all of the magic sparkle and joy!

Helen, Thank you so much for posting this today! I had only learned about your blog shortly before the closing notice. Your blogs are wonderful and so full of info. I love the history!!!Was my favorite subject in school! I know- weird! But history tells us all about so much! One day I hope there is a book about the history of Kirks Folly Inc. I would love to read it as I'm a relative newbie..only 8 years. I hope you will do a blog on occasion, even if it is on your own. Love your art work and your blogs! Bblue. Elizabeth(Betsy)Clark
ReplyDeleteMy favorite memories of Halloween are in grade school and drawing a haunted house, with a fence with pumpkins on the posts....a witch flying on her broomstick in front of a full moon with a black cat on board! There would be bats flying and it was all so fabulous! I wish I still had on of those drawings...I would frame it now! Trick or treating with my sisters....Dad would follow along......I usually fell down at least once and he'd have to help me pick up my candy! LOL! I love cemetaries, witches, jack o lanterns, ghosts and ghouls! I love scary movies but not gory movies.....just scary and those are hard to come by. I hope you have a fabulous Halloween Helen and all the Kirks.........my Grandson is going to be a policeman this year! What fun!!!! Dawn Peterson Iverson aka StormFairy
ReplyDeleteOn this day, the last day of Kirks Folly, there really is only one phrase I can think of: "Quote the raven: Nevermore". Thank you for the joy you have brought into my life. May your retirement be full of good food, good wine, naps and many cats. And if you ever get a hankerin' to sell your designs again, know we will still be here. Teresa Reese

I enjoyed this Halloween posting, Helen! I love wearing my KF pieces year
ReplyDeleteround...and especially during this season. I have a wonderous 4 year old black
cat named "Duck," which as a rescue kitten at my veterinarian's clinic was the
only one that hadn't been adopted. He is so special and I am so grateful for
finding him. I also had another beloved rescued black kitten years ago in the '80's,
"Pyewacket," which I drove 80 miles in a fierce storm out to Nags Head in
NC to save/adopt. There I was informed of the shelter's policy about adopting
black cats around Halloween, their cautious approach as you have mentioned, but I
was able to convince them my intentions were only for the best. :)
Other fantastic memories I have are of dressing up as witches with my mom (I sometimes
dressed as a black cat too) and creating a haunted house for the neighborhood kids
to visit -- what fun we had!!! I'm also a fan of The Wizard of OZ and Alice In
Wonderland movies/books.
Blessings to you, all your family, and KF! Thanks so much for the Magical years!

"Oh My Pumpkin" said the "Ghost Hunters"! "Jack Flash" has "Gone Batty"! The "Magic of Halloween Wizard", petted his "Raven's Head", and sent the "Ghost Chaser" after "Boo Boo Ghost" who was "Smashing Pumpkins" over near "Halloween Hall". "Divine Diva" and "Witchcraft Fairy" stirred their "Witches Brew" and said "Hocus Pocus" to calm everyone down. "Shadow Black Cat" and the "Bump in the Night" ghosts led everyone to the enchanted pumpkin patch where they all gazed up at "Moon Diva" in the night sky as the "Bats" flew "Over the Seaview Moon". Happy Halloween everyone! The Blue Fairy

DeleteHi Helen,
ReplyDeleteThank you for all the interesting information about Halloween. I especially loved the black cat story. My cat Mandy went to the Rainbow Bridge about a year and a half ago, and I'm thinking of adopting another cat. I've had a black cat before, he was the most loving cat, and what personality!!! I certainly would consider adopting another black cat. Like all animal lovers, we just want a pet to love us. Thank you for all the beautiful jewelry that you have designed, I love and wear it all the time. I promise to continue to sparkle the world with the rest of the lovely Kirks Folly lovers. Blessings. Sheryl Pierson
So happy to see your blog; I have been so sad about your closing! Such great memories of Halloween as a child in the 60s - the streets felt surreal with lit jackolanterns and groups of happy children in costumes everywhere!! I still have a momento as a child from that time - some "sheet music" called "The Witches Cat" (I think I ripped it out of a Jack and Jill magazine) which goes right along with the black cat superstition: Second verse says "Oh, you better stay away from big black cats, they are in a magic spell just now. And you really can't tell which might belong to some old witch, so don't answer when they cry meow meow! Take care, beware, when a big black kitty cries Me-ow, Me-ow." :)
ReplyDeleteNo one does Halloween like Kirks Folly, and I will always treasure all my pieces (which includes four Halloween charm bracelets :) I also have the ruby slippers Wizard of Oz locket and the charm bracelet. I have some nice "photos" inside the locket of Dorothy et al (I cut up part of an old VCR tape box of the Wizard of Oz that had images that were perfect size :) Hope you continue the blog - Lots of love and the best wishes to you, Jenniefer and your whole family!! Debbie (goodmorningstarshine)
Happy Halloween!!! :) I love your designs, Helen, and am decked out in Kirks Folly for this special day!
